Captains of DarkTide

Silverlode Interactive announced today that its Fantasy Pirate game Captains of DarkTide (CoDT) has entered its open beta testing phase. DarkTide is a Browser-based MMORPG for Mac and PC. As of today, players who sign up at http://www.playdarktide.com will be granted instant access to this full featured strategy MMORPG.

Players who register today will be the first to experience new content and game features as they are released, including the upcoming release of PvP Zones. Players entering PvP zones will have their PvP flags automatically enabled, allowing for combat with other players. Loot chests with high-level rewards will periodically spawn throughout the PvP zones, allowing players who can survive the longest a chance to gather epic gear.

For PvE players, new zones will be enabled throughout beta, allowing captains to do battle with epic bosses; ships commanded by Liches who can drain the life force of your crew, gigantic Ice Elementals born from the massive icebergs floating at sea; the tougher the opponent, the greater the reward. By gathering components from the wreckage of defeated foes, players will be able to construct more powerful cannons and bribe creatures with epic abilities to join their crew.

Because CoDT is set in a fantasy universe, the variety of upcoming content is boundless. Dwarves construct air ships which players will acquire, while the elves build and sell living ships. Undead can be bound to crew a ship, but asking them to serve side-by-side with humans can have “undesired” effects. “We are thrilled with the game already,” said Silverlode president Jason Faller, “and we look forward to dazzling players with the many features we are going to soon reveal.”

I've been in game two different days now and they've made improvements even since they opened the beta which is a great sign. Only thing I don't like about the game so far is that its missing sailing related gear and environmental variables. This doesn't take away from the fun but it does leave out the draw to tall ships.

This game is all about sail ships but there is no wind. None of the skills are based on sailing. None of the gear has anything to do with sailing either. I just find that odd.

Florensia (for comparison) has different types of sails and anchors which affect how your ship deals with the wind, balance and stopping. The environment has a prevailing wind, adverse wind, etc. You must pay attention to direction the wind is blowing as it affects your speed based on the type of sail you have equipped. If you put a flag on your ship it will even blow in the direction of the wind giving you a old school visual reference to the direction of the prevailing wind. That is actually pretty cool.

That said, Captains of DarkTide is still fun to play, has great theme appropriate music and nice graphics. I look forward to seeing how they improve on it for the release. I will be asking for these features in the forums.

Update: The lead developer is not interested is the aspects of sailboats. They are purely boxes of eye candy that you load with cannons and crew. To get around sailing, the FAQ describes it like this: "Your captain is a sorcerer who possesses at least the basic knowledge to conjure up a wind to fill his own sails".

The focus is to accomplish campaign goals, grind for money and mats to buy a bigger ship so it can hold more combat gear. There are 3 skill trees for the captain as well, defense, protection/healing and offense.

I don't think the devs were going for realism there and I can totally understand why (although the idea of powering your sailboat with "magical wind" does sound kind of like an excuse.). They are probably aiming for the RPG/RTS crowd rather than people looking for a realistic sailing simulation, so I guess it's fair to leave out additional features they think just bloats the game…
