CCP’s latest MMO lands on the PS3.
EVE Online developer CCP announced recently that its upcoming MMO shooter Dust 514 is due out summer 2012 and will be a PS3 exclusive. The game’s business model, according to CCP’s press release, is a “departure from the traditional subscription or one-time purchase model,” and will be “supported by revenues from the in-game sale of virtual goods.”
This doesn’t necessarily mean that the game will be free, as the press release makes no mention of the game being “free-to-play”, though it is not hard to imagine that it is (since it doesn’t seem to be P2P or B2P).
DUST 514 is set in the same universe as EVE Online, and things you do in DUST 514 will affect EVE Online and vice versa.
“The ability for Sony Computer Entertainment to partner with a developer like CCP, known for pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation in the MMO genre, holds tremendous potential for the PlayStation 3 community,” said Rob Dyer, Senior Vice President, Sony Computer Entertainment of America. “We anticipate that DUST 514 will transform the landscape across PlayStation 3 and the PC, ushering in a new era of shared cross platform gaming.”
Hilmar Veigar Petursson, CEO of CCP added: “When we set out to build a true persistent shooter for consoles, it was evident that Sony’s dedication to providing a flexible and MMO-friendly platform -alongside a robust virtual goods business model- made the PlayStation 3 the natural home for DUST 514.”
“CCP’s ambition is to bring a level of truly meaningful, persistent gameplay to the PlayStation 3 never before seen.”
DUST 514 is also said to have Move and PS Vita (if you haven’t heard, that’s what they call the NGP now) support. You can read more about DUST 514 on the Playstation Blog and the game’s official website.
