Long running fantasy MMORPG gets a new way to play.
While announcing the coming launch of Lineage II’s “official service” in Europe, NCsoft dropped the bomb and announced that the long running fantasy MMORPG would go free-to-play.
The new European version of the game is confirmed to be free-to-play (it’s officially named “Lineage II Free-to-Play”), while the current NCsoft West service, which is open to both North American and European players, will transition to a “hybrid business model”.
“NCsoft West is planning a new Hybrid business model tailored for its players,” the press release writes. “This new business model provides features an order of magnitude greater than those of a conventional subscription model, and creates a new way to play.”
Lineage II’s official European service will be handled by Innova, the publisher currently in charge of the Russian version of the game. Though, players in Europe can choose to play in the NCsoft West servers that have been available in the region since 2004 even after the official European launch.
The free-to-play transition will occur when the game’s largest content update to date, Lineage II: Goddess of Destruction, launches. For more information, check out the Goddess of Destruction teaser page.
